Sutter North Names Hospice Volunteer of 2004

|
February 1, 2005

Sutter North Medical Foundation has announced their employee’s choice of Dedicated Hospice Volunteer of the Year. The 2004 recipient is Mary Jane Mathews.
“Mary Jane continually goes above and beyond her minimum volunteer duties, despite the fact that she doesn’t drive and walks to almost all her patient’s homes,” said Angelic Garret, Hospices’ Volunteer Coordinator in 2004. “Among other things, she helps patients write letters to family members, cooks meals, reads to patients who have lost their vision and has been a companion to those who have needed her most.”
Ms. Mathews has been a hospice volunteer at Sutter North Hospice since the program’s inception in 2002. In addition to being a hospice volunteer at Sutter North, she volunteers at King Avenue School, her church and has been a volunteer for autistic children and in a domestic violence home for women and children.
“Hospice is the last stage of growth for our patients, and I enjoy comforting them through that time,” said Ms. Mathews. “The patients and their families are so appreciative to me, even when I see them around town months and years later, it is very rewarding.”
