Sutter North Medical Foundation Information Technology Department Secures Remote Access for Physicians

June 26, 2003
The Sutter North Medical Foundation and Fremont-Rideout Health Group Information Technology Departments have completed secure remote accessibility to Fremont-Rideout Health Group’s Clinical Information System, McKesson/HBOC, for Sutter North Medical Group’s medical providers. This new advancement in technology, called Care Viewer, enables authorized physicians to access information from their homes and offices, improving their ability to expedite patient care. According to Michael Blanchard, M.D., “I can make my laboratory, X-ray, and vital sign rounds without going to the hospital and using their computers. With Care Viewer, I know if I need to order more tests or if a specialist visit is needed. This enables me to prioritize my hospital visits—essentially I can more effectively plan patient care.”
Using McKesson/HBOC’s Care Viewer, physicians have contact with all of their patient’s information through a secure connection over the Internet—enabling them to view data such as lab reports. Physicians can review a patient’s file prior to a hospital visit, giving them more information before they arrive at the hospital. They can also check on their patients throughout the day. If an emergency arises, physicians can make informed decisions more quickly. “In some situations, time can be a very important factor for improving patient care. Some decisions need to be made immediately by your doctor. It’s the Information Technology Department’s responsibility to ensure our medical providers get needed information as easily and effectively as possible. For that reason, we are constantly upgrading our technology to improve the way Sutter North provides for patient care,” said Geoff Kauffman, Director of Information Technology for Sutter North Medical Foundation.
